Timeline – A Quick Look into Electronic Cigarette History

blu electronic cigarettesThe rise in popularity of today’s electronic cigarette is the culmination of well over a decade’s worth of growth, evolution and even controversy. If you are new to the e-cig revolution or just have a few moments of time to spare, here is a short timeline, outlining some of the more important dates in electronic cigarette history.

2000: One piece of popular electronic cigarette lore holds to the idea that Hon Lik, a heavy tobacco cigarette smoker, first came up with the idea of an electronic cigarette after a dream. In the dream, Hon Lik was drowning in the sea, when suddenly the water was vaporized. Upon awakening, Lik supposedly used this vision as inspiration to begin designing the first electronic cigarette.2003: Hon Lik, a pharmacist, seeks out and receives a patent for electronic cigarettes. The invention allegedly comes after Lik’s father dies of lung cancer.2006: Electronic cigarettes are first introduced to Europe.2007: Electronic cigarettes make their way to the shores of the United States. Finally, American smokers have an option over traditional tobacco cigarettes.2008: The World Health Organization (WHO) demands that marketers avoid making statements about e-cigarettes being used a smoking cessation product.2008: In response to the WHO, Ruyan, Health New Zealand conducts and published this study.  The study makes claims that carcinogens and toxicants present in e-cigs are below below harmful levels2009 -2010: The year 2009 saw a fire storm of debate, legislation and controvery  all surrounding the topics of e-cigarettes. A number of states and countries announced bans limiting or preventing the sell of electronic cigarettes.2011: This Study is published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study compares electronic cigarettes to traditional nicotine replacement products.2012: blu Cigs is acquired by one of the largest and oldest companies in America, Lorillard, Inc. – the third-largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the U.S.FAQs
